Acoustic Guitar

The acoustic guitar generally plays the part of a rhythm instrument in a worship band. Chords or parts of chords can be strummed in rhythmic ways to keep the song on course and keep the band on the same page.  Melodic parts or arpeggios  can also be used to add interest or beauty to special sections.

When the acoustic is being used a rhythm instrument, consistency is very important. The rest of the band is listening for you to keep the song heading in the right direction. Rhythm parts can be as simple as one note following a songs rhythm, on one chord ringing out at each chord change, down strokes over a power chord or as busy as strumming chords with a complex strum pattern.  Remember that as more instruments are added, the sound can get muddied up quickly and the acoustic guitar is less necessary.  Playing higher chord voicings or simpler chords with simpler strum patterns can help to tighten the sound right back up.

A lead sound can add interest to specific parts. Simple melodic lines can be used for intros when another instrument is providing a rhythm part. Acoustic guitars can also bring a nice lead sound to add interest to instrumental sections or add color to a series of chord changes.  Arpeggios work great for quiet songs or pretty parts. As long as other instruments aren’t over playing, an arpeggio can lead sections or even entire songs quite nicely.  They are also useful when an acoustic guitar part doesn’t add to a song and you have nothing else to play. Since they are quiet, they won’t muddy the sound too badly.

If a song builds to where your part isn’t necessary, continuing to strum quietly with a light touch can help to clean up the sound.  If you continue to play full bore, there is risk of your sound competing with the other instruments and creating a sound not unlike an old junky freight train.  Don’t overplay!
The acoustic guitar sound is often the foundation of a song.  Your part deserves carefully thought out and practiced.  For many people, an acoustic guitar is endearing and inspiring. The Spirit can work through the warmth and clarity of your instrument.  Take it seriously!
